7.4 Drivers of water security

The drivers of Waternet’s strategic vision for achieving urban water security include corporate rebranding, protecting good quality raw water and human health, political and economic factors, carbon neutrality, population growth and climate change (summarised in Figure 7.1).

7.4.1 Corporate rebranding

The campaign towards water conservation started in the 1990s when drinking water companies began to term themselves environmentally sustainable companies. This led to water companies having two objectives: first, reusing waste materials and, second, making customers behave in a way that reduces water consumption. Today, water companies in the Netherlands, including Waternet, try to reuse all the waste materials produced; however, there is less focus on reducing water consumption as it is already low at around 130 litres per person per day, and the Netherlands is not considered a water-stressed country.
